# How to write a novel in Google Docs (and the night you should leave)

Docs is honest until Heading 2 soup. Here is how to use it, what to track on the side, and the four signs the file has become a warehouse with no catalog.

> Write a novel in Google Docs with Heading 1 for chapters and Outline view. Leave when you keep a second Doc for the cast, write on two machines that fight, or Find on a name returns a wall. The book needs a catalog. Docs is a memo pad that got promoted.

The scrollbar lied first.

Not the plot. Not the love interest. The little grey pill on the right got skinny, and I thought that meant I had written a book.

I had written a very long memo.

Google Docs is the honest default. Free. Two people can sit in it. Your phone can open it in a parking lot. If you are starting tonight, start here. I am not going to dunk on a blank page's best friend.

Here is the job Docs is actually good at.

## How to write a novel in Google Docs without tricking yourself

One file. One title at the top that is the book, not "FINAL_v4_REAL."

Heading 1 for each chapter name. Not bold. Heading 1. Outline on the left becomes a cheap binder. You can jump. You can reorder if you are brave.

A page break at the end of a chapter if you ever print. Skip this and your printer will invent a religion.

Comments for line notes from a beta reader. Not for "does she still have the green coat." Comments are not a story bible. They are sticky notes that multiply.

Suggesting mode for a coauthor who should not own the file. If they need to own it, you already left "one memo" territory.

I did all of that. It worked. Chapter 1 through chapter 9 felt like a book.

Chapter 10 is where the warehouse starts.

## The night the file became a warehouse

I hit Command-F for a name.

Google returned a wall. First mention. Last mention. A joke in chapter 3. A lie in chapter 8. The coat.

None of those hits told me whether the coat was still in the hallway.

So I opened a second Doc called CAST.

That is the leave. Not "Docs is bad." The leave is the second file.

Where I grew up, we kept accounts in one ledger. Two ledgers is how you lose money and then argue about whose fault it was.

A novel is a ledger of decisions. Who knows. Who is lying. Whether the knife is still in the drawer.

Docs will store the sentences. It will not be the catalog.

## Four signs, not a vibe

You keep a spreadsheet or a second Doc for the cast.

Find on a proper name is noise.

You email yourself the .docx to write on the other laptop, then forget which copy is Tuesday. [Two computers is a different essay.](/blog/write-novel-two-computers)

You paste three chapters into ChatGPT because you cannot ask the file a question.

Any two of those and the memo has been promoted beyond its rank. Dual-wield is fine. Stay in Docs for drafting if you want. Move the master when the catalog becomes the job.

## How to leave without losing a Saturday

Download .docx. Not PDF. PDF is a photograph of a book.

Import into something that splits Heading 1 into chapters. Typewriter does this. Scrivener does this. If your tool pastes one blob, it is still a memo.

Put the CAST Doc next to the page as a bible, not as a sibling file you forget to open.

Keep Google Docs for the ugly first pass if that is your superstition. Superstitions that finish books get to stay. Superstitions that spawn FINAL_v7 do not.

I still open Docs for letters. I do not ask a letter tool to remember a town's name in book two.

## FAQ

### Can you write a full novel in Google Docs?

Yes. Plenty of people finish 80k in one file. It works until continuity and chapters become a second job. Then you are using a memo tool as a warehouse.

### How should I structure chapters in Google Docs?

Heading 1 for chapter titles. Outline on the left. Page breaks between chapters if you print. Do not nest Heading 2 soup for scenes unless you enjoy scrolling.

### When should I leave Google Docs for novel software?

Four signs: a cast spreadsheet, Find on a name is useless, two computers, or you paste into ChatGPT because the Doc cannot answer who has the knife. Export .docx and import into a binder.
